Rules

I'm bored today. Here's the "manifesto" of the CJM book club. Suggestions are welcome. These rules are not etched in stone: they are my attempt to address things that have come up in the past and to make sure all members are on the same page--no pun intended.

New Members
New members are handled in an ad-hoc manner. Basically, if an established member of the club vouches for someone, then that someone is welcome to join. Let's define "established member" as either 1) an original member or 2) someone who has been in the club for the last 3 books. As a last resort, any controversial new member should be confirmed with a vote.

Book Choice Order
See this thread for the current order. I'll do my best to keep it up-to-date. New members are put at the bottom of the list when they join. After a member's book has been read, that member is put to the bottom of the list.

Book Choice
A member's book choice belongs solely to that member. No other member should try to influence another member's choice, unless the "chooser" explicitly asks for input. There should be no restrictions on what book is to be read; however, members should be considerate to each other concerning the length of the book and whether or not others have read it.

If a member has already read the book that has been chosen, he or she can let the choosing member know about it, knowing that the choosing member is under no obligation to change his or her choice, with the following clause: if there are 3 or more members who have already read the potential choice, then the choosing member must choose another book (unless those who have already read the book want to read it again).

Disclipine
There is a 3 strike policy:

  • Strike 1: Bumped down one position
  • Strike 2: Bumped down to the bottom
  • Strike 3: Banned, and a tribunal with be formed to accept applications for reinstatement (Reader: "Can I be re-instated?" Tribunal: "Yes.")
